Two large white spent-fuel transport casks with impact limiters secured on rail flatcars under a blue sky
Massatomics.com 10 CFR Part 71 · 49 CFR · IAEA SSR-6

Nuclear materials move safely because someone planned every mile.

Mass Atomics helps utilities, fuel suppliers, isotope producers, and decommissioning teams design packages, win certification, and ship radioactive materials by road, rail, and barge — compliantly, defensibly, and on schedule.

01 — Services

What we do

Transport is where nuclear projects meet the public road, the railroad, and three regulators at once. We close the gap between a package that exists and a shipment that is approved to move.

SERVICE / 01⬢

Package design & certification support

From concept to Certificate of Compliance — structural, thermal, shielding, and criticality inputs organized into a Safety Analysis Report (SAR) the NRC can review.

  • Type B & fissile package strategy
  • SAR chapter support & RAI responses
  • Impact limiter & tie-down design review
SERVICE / 02⬢

Shipment planning & route analysis

Route surveys, bridge and clearance checks, state permits, tribal and state notifications, and contingency planning — before the cask ever leaves the pad.

  • Highway HRCQ routing under 49 CFR 397
  • Heavy-haul feasibility & surveys
  • Transload & intermodal transfer plans
SERVICE / 03⬢

Regulatory compliance & licensing

One shipment, overlapping rulebooks. We map every requirement so nothing falls between NRC, DOT, and state agencies.

  • 10 CFR Part 71 & Part 73 alignment
  • 49 CFR 171–180 shipping papers & placarding
  • IAEA SSR-6 for international moves
SERVICE / 04⬢

Intermodal logistics

Road, rail, and barge are not three shipments — they are one chain with two risky handoffs. We engineer the handoffs.

  • Crane, rigging & lift planning
  • Dedicated train & Atlas-type railcar coordination
  • Barge loading, ballast & sea-fastening review
SERVICE / 05⬢

Safety analysis support

Shielding, dose-rate, thermal, and criticality calculations that hold up under normal conditions and hypothetical accidents.

  • 10 CFR 71.47 / 71.51 dose & containment checks
  • Thermal & fire-condition modeling support
  • CSI, TI & fissile classification
SERVICE / 06⬢

Training, audits & readiness

Crews, carriers, and emergency responders who have rehearsed the plan move differently when something goes wrong.

  • Shipper & carrier procedure audits
  • Tabletop exercises & dry runs
  • Emergency response information reviews
02 — Materials

What we move

Different contents fail in different ways, need different packages, and trigger different rules. We start every engagement with the material — not the vehicle.

☢
Highest consequence · Type B fissile

Spent nuclear fuel

Dry-cask and wet-shipment campaigns from reactor sites to storage or a future repository. Heat, shielding, and criticality control in a dual-purpose canister or transport cask — plus the public and state engagement a spent-fuel route demands.

⬡
Fresh fuel · LEU & HALEU up to 19.75%

Fresh fuel & HALEU

UF₆ cylinders, oxide powder, pellets, and finished assemblies for conventional and advanced reactors. Criticality safety index, moderation control, and the new HALEU package bottleneck — planned early, before it delays first core load.

✚
Time-critical · Often Type A / Type B

Medical isotopes & radiopharmaceuticals

Mo-99, Lu-177, Ac-225, and other short-lived products where decay is eating the shipment's value by the hour. Fast, compliant routing and packaging that protects both dose limits and delivery windows.

▣
Decommissioning · Large components & waste

Waste & decommissioning material

Reactor vessels, steam generators, LLW, and GTCC waste. Oversize/overweight planning, SCO and LSA classification, and packages for loads that were never designed to travel.

Why the package is the product

In radioactive transport, safety does not ride with the driver or the locomotive — it rides in the package. Regulations assume the vehicle can crash. The cask must survive the drop, the puncture, the fire, and the water, and still contain its contents. That is why package strategy comes first in every plan we write.

Not sure which package you need?

Most clients arrive with a material and a deadline, not a package model. That is the right starting point. Tell us the isotope, form, activity, and destination — we will map the package options and what each one costs in certification time.

03 — Package testing · 10 CFR 71.73

Designed to survive the worst day

Tap each hypothetical accident condition. A certified Type B package must pass all four, in sequence, on the same specimen — and still meet containment and shielding limits.

04 — Quick planner

Sketch a shipment in 30 seconds

Pick a material, a mode, and a rough distance. This gives you a starting package class, the rules that will govern it, and a realistic planning horizon. It is a scoping tool — not a compliance determination.

05 — How we work

From material to movement

STEP 01

Assess

Characterize the material, activity, heat load, and fissile content. Confirm the destination can legally and physically receive it.

STEP 02

Package

Select or design the package, check its Certificate of Compliance covers your exact contents, and close any SAR gaps.

STEP 03

Plan & permit

Route, permits, notifications, carrier qualification, lift and transload plans, security and emergency information.

STEP 04

Ship & prove it

Pre-shipment surveys, dose and contamination checks, shipping papers, tracking, and a close-out file that survives an audit.

The rulebooks we work in
10 CFR 71

NRC — Packaging & transportation

Package certification, QA, dose and containment limits, and hypothetical accident conditions.

49 CFR 171–180

DOT — Hazardous materials

Classification, shipping papers, marking, labeling, placarding, and carrier requirements.

10 CFR 73

NRC — Physical protection

Security planning for spent fuel and strategic special nuclear material in transit.

IAEA SSR-6

International transport

The global basis for cross-border moves and for most national regulations outside the U.S.

06 — About Mass Atomics

A small firm for a heavy problem

Mass Atomics was founded on a simple observation from the fuel-cycle world: America knows how to make, burn, and store nuclear fuel far better than it knows how to move it. As restarts, uprates, SMRs, and HALEU production all scale up, transport — packages, routes, permits, and public trust — is becoming the bottleneck.

We are a focused consulting practice, not a carrier and not a cask vendor. That independence matters: our job is to recommend the package and the route that fit your material and your regulator, not the one we happen to sell.

  • 1
    Independent advice

No packages to sell, no trucks to fill. Recommendations follow the analysis.

  • 2
    Regulator-readable work

Every deliverable is written so an NRC or DOT reviewer can trace the claim to its source.

  • 3
    Field-practical plans

Bridge clearances, crane radii, and tie-downs checked against the real route — not just the regulation.

massatomics.com

This page is your starter site. To put it live on the domain you bought, work through these four steps — most people finish in under an hour.

1 · Host it
Deploy this site to a static host (Netlify, Vercel, Cloudflare Pages, or GitHub Pages) — all have free tiers that fit a consulting site.
2 · Connect DNS
In your registrar, add the host's records: usually a CNAME for www and an A / ALIAS record for the root domain. Your host shows the exact values.
3 · Turn on HTTPS
Your host issues a free Let's Encrypt certificate automatically once DNS propagates (minutes to a few hours).
4 · Add email
Create hello@massatomics.com in Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 and add its MX records in the same DNS panel — so clients email the domain, not a personal inbox.

Want help with step 2? Send a screenshot of your registrar's DNS page (no passwords) and we can name the exact records to add.

Before you launch, replace these

Business email and phone in the contact section, your service area, any licenses or QA program details you hold, and a real headshot / team bio when you are ready. Do not publish credentials you have not earned yet — clients in this industry check.

07 — Questions

Common first questions

Using an already-certified package for contents inside its Certificate of Compliance can be a matter of weeks of planning. Amending a certificate or certifying a new design is measured in years — which is why package strategy belongs at the start of a project, not the end.
No. Mass Atomics is a consulting firm. We design the plan, support the package and compliance work, and coordinate qualified carriers, riggers, and railroads who perform the physical move under their own licenses and QA programs.
Four things: what the material is (isotope, chemical/physical form, activity or mass), where it is, where it needs to go, and when it needs to be there. With those, we can tell you the realistic package options and the critical path.
Both. Single-shipment scoping and route studies are a common entry point. Program work — a decommissioning campaign, a fuel-supply chain, a recurring isotope lane — is scoped as a retainer or phase-based engagement.
